• Columbia Encyclopaedia
• Encarta Online
  One of the best of those on disk and quite good online, though not as good as the disk version.
• MacquarieNet
  [Australia’s Online Reference Library]
  Information on authors, biographies, places, animals, special topics, teaching resources and more. Australian and excellent. Take the Free month’s trial before subscribing.
• Smithsonian, Encyclopaedia
  Like all the other works from this source, this is really worthwhile viewing.
• Wikipedia
  A continually evolving and expanding encyclopaedia being developed by contributors from around the world. Not always perfect because people are continually adding and modifying, but it is a ‘living’ document.
• World Book Encyclopaedia
  One of the three big encyclopaedias, especially in schools.

  Started by Douglas Addams of ‘Hitchhiker’ fame. This is a continually expanding collection of information about ‘life, the universe and everything’, created by contributors. Some interesting, some strange, some very informative - also called the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
• Probert Encyclopaedia
  A huge storehouse of information, with the only apparent weakness, the more difficult than usual way of accessing it. Persevere though. It is worth it when you do get there.

• Calendopaedia
  An initial section on comparison of calendars, then an extensive menu of calendars from around the world with, finally, a menu of topics. Described on the site as ‘The source of data on calendars.’

  A Free reference site which actually goes far beyond an encyclopaedia, allowing you to search in a number of topic areas from ‘art’ to ‘thesauri’ including encyclopaedias. A fabulous resource. Previously Xrefer.
