Coal Mining History,
Victoria Coal, the Black Gold of the region underpinned Gippslands wealth from the 1920s, with the
discovery of one of the worlds largest coal deposits in the Latrobe Valley. Today, you can visit the decommissioned State
Coal Mine in Wonthaggi and hear stories of the humour and hardships of life underground. Also in the area is the Coal Creek
Heritage Village in Korumburra which authentically depicts life in a coal mining town between the 1870s-1920s.
