In 2008 Queensland schools will implement curriculum, assessment and reporting reforms outlined within the Queensland Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework (QCAR).

In recent years Education Queensland has restructured Yrs1-10 Curriculum within 8 "Key Learning Areas" (KLA's). Each KLA comprises a number of "Strands" or sub areas. Schools are expected to implement the KLA's over a staggered 'Time Line' as Syllabus and support material documents become available.

Within Queensland, the QSA(Queensland Studies Authority) produces most of our syllabii and support material.

Syllabus documents, Sourcebook Guidelines, Statement of Contents, Modules etc can all be downloaded from the QSA Website as they become available.

Education Queensland is currently finalising the "Core Curriculum" document which will outline how schools might address the 8 'Key Learning Areas' (KLA's), Assessment and Reporting, and teaching within an 'Outcomes' approach. A link with this site will be established as soon as it is available.

At present, schools have the flexibility of arranging their curriculum within individual KLA's or designing a 'meld' or integrated approach with some or all of the KLA's. Several schools throughout the state are trialing innovative models. (See below) Also Click on "Schools" on the 'task bar' (on top of page) to view samples.

  A SCHOOL MODEL WORTH CONSIDERING?

PRIMARY

Maths and English are given a 'stand alone' status but also infused within contexts best associated with other KLA’s eg Maths ‘graphing’ within SOSE

Parental expectations usually support a ‘stand alone’ status for Maths/English

The remaining KLA Outcomes are addressed where possible through integrated units, and/or literacy exercises. As new syllabus Outcomes become available, links to existing Units can be explored. (Thus teachers may not feel compelled to create new units of work for each new outcome as they roll out.)

Thus many “Outcomes” could be developed within one specified unit, and each “Outcome” might be addressed through a number of different units or learning experiences.

Where possible Units should relate to local issues and provide opportunities to develop the “Attributes of the Lifelong Learner
