CLASS:  Year  Two        

Late Stage 1                                      

 

ORGANISATION:  30 Mins weekly (Whole Class ); 30 mins weekly (Small Group)

 

AIMS:

1.     To provide opportunities for students to become familiar with the use of a form of electronic communication technology  (email) through participation in a collaborative email Literacy project.

2.     To encourage students to respond personally to a Literary text and develop an appreciation of  the  viewpoints of others 

3.     To enable students to distinguish factual Information texts from Fiction texts and to complete a simple research task .

4.     To encourage students to use  a variety of human, print and electronic resources to obtain information eg - guest speakers; books; illustrations; diagrams; cd roms .

LEARNING OUTCOMES

English K-6 : TS1.1; RS 1.7 ; WS 1.13 

·       Listens attentively to a story, makes predictions , discusses plot ,characters etc.

·       Recognises  some of the textual features of an email message eg address; subject; messsage; signature.

·       Knows some  of the conventions of an online  Book Rap Discussion (raplingo; rap map etc)

·       Contributes to discussions about literary texts with others through joint construction of texts - email messages

 

Information Skills

·       Distinguishes between factual and fiction texts (Define)

·       Knows location of Information books and Fiction texts in library (Locate)

·       Draws out factual information embedded in a narrative (Select)

·       Completes  a simple information report which expresses comparative information.(Organise & Present)

 

 Learning Experiences

·       Share story Stellaluna with class. Children discuss the illustrations and favourite parts of the story. Tell the children about participation in Book  raps and scribe a joint class introductory message. (Library)

·       Set up  a Book Rap Wall in Library and Classrooms to keep a record of the Book  Rap. Children contribute to this visual record which includes Book Rap map; Intro messages and Book Rap Discussion Points, Student artwork. Create a class scrapbook for students to keep copies of messages . (Library & Classroom)

·       Each week during Library lesson set aside time for whole class discussion of the Book Rap Point. Children are organised into 4 groups responsible for the weekly contributions. Each  group works with the TL ( for one week) to jointly construct and send an email message and to collect messages sent by other participants. ( Library )

·       Share some story books and information texts about bats and birds. Discuss their locations in the library and ways to identify their respective  shelf locations in the library - (Spine labels; Yellow spots etc) (Library )

·       In classroom, children work in pairs to explore the Mammals CD and to find out about different types of fruit bats. Children also painted their favourite parts of the story. (Classroom)

·       Children work in pairs to record information about how bats and birds are alike or different. Share the responses. Children then individually write a simple comparative information report expressing at least one of the similarities or differences.   (Library)

·       Children will also have a guest speaker from WIRES the Wildlife rescue service to tell children about the work of the organisation and the experience of raising a baby fruit  bat like Stellaluna. (Library)

 

·       A Book Rap  Sheet (website) will be developed and mounted on the school Intranet as an electronic record of the  book rap. This will allow the children to share their Book Rap experiences with other classes and their parents.

Pointers

·       Enjoys listening to stories for enjoyment

·       Discusses  events in a story and shows empathy with characters, providing  some supporting details from the text

·       Contributes to jointly constructed email responses to Book rap points

·       Uses some of the Book Rap lingo appropriately

·       Can distinguish between fact and fiction texts

·       Knows the locations for picture "story" books and "information" books in the library

·       Actively seeks information and talks about information found in factual texts

·       Interprets illustrations and diagrams

·       Navigates  a simple multimedia text  and local website.

·       Can identify similarities and differences and can express these in simple comparative statements eg Bats hang upside down but birds don't
