LOONY LIMERICKS

Another favourite area for readers is the Poetry section in our Library. This page is dedicated to sharing some very funny poems called Limericks.

What is a limerick, Mother?
It's a form of verse, said brother
In which lines one and two
Rhyme with five when it's through
And three and four rhyme with each other.

Author unknown

  • Limericks are humorous rhyming poems which have a pattern.
  • Limericks were originally written by Edward Lear
  • Limericks combine a couplet with a triplet.
  • Line 1 usually introduces the character.
  • Lines 1, 2 & 5 rhyme with each other.
  • Lines 3 and 4 also rhyme .

Here are some of our favourite Loony Limericks

A diner while dining at Crewe
Found a very large mouse in his stew.
Said the waiter, "Don't shout
And wave it about,
Or the rest will be wanting one too.

.

There was a young woman named Bright
Whose speed was much faster than light.
She set out one day
In a relative way,
And returned on the previous night

Author unknown .

There was an old man of Peru
Who dreamt he was eating his shoe
He woke in the night
With a terrible fright
To find it was perfectly true.

Edward Lear

When you read these Limericks aloud, you become aware that they also have a rhythm. The Limerick sounds like a musical chant and usually has the following pattern.

da DA da da DA da da DA (8 syllables)(8 syllables)
da DA da da DA da da DA (8 syllables)
da DA da da DA (5 syllables)
da DA da da DA (5 syllables)
da DA da da DA da da DA (8 syllables)

Try to write some Loony Limericks of your own and mail them to Kidz Book Zone.

The best each term will be published here on the site.
