Brother Tony Butler was born in Sydney in 1940; he grew up in Darlinghurst where he attended the Marist Brothers High School for several years before commencing his training as a Marist Brother at Mittagong.  He made his profession as a Marist Brother in 1958 with the religious name Placidus, and after a short time teaching in Cairns he returned to Sydney to continue his studies at Sydney University, graduating at the end of 1962 with a BA and Dip Ed.  He has taught in a number of Marist schools in Sydney and in Newcastle, specialising in English literature and filling the role of English Coordinator.  He completed his A Mus A studies in piano in 1983 and later took organ lessons from Sydney Town Hall organist, Robert Ampt.  In 1988 he graduated with a Master's degree in English literature from the Shakespeare Institute at the University of Birmingham (UK).  He has written his family history and also written extensively on Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers, and other Marist topics; he has recently written a history of Marist College Penshurst for its 2003 Golden Jubilee and has written a history of the Marist establishments at Mittagong for their centenary in 2006.  He is currently writing a centenary history of Marist College Kogarah for their celebrations in 2009.
