Links to the Curriculum Framework
Using Federation as a theme provides teachers and students with opportunities for research activities, to work with statistical information, to reflect on our past, consider the changes that have taken place, appreciate the achievements of fellow Australians and contemplate our future
While working on this theme students will have opportunities to demonstrate achievement in many of the Overarching and Learning Area outcomes as set out in the Curriculum Framework.

Literacy Skills 1.   Students use language to understand, develop and communicate ideas and information and interact with others. After visits (real time or electronic) to Parliament House, the Constitution Centre, state or national archives students can:
Conduct oral discussions, reports, presentations, debates.
Complete written reports, letters, newspaper articles, recounts, descriptions.
Participate in dramatic presentations, role-play.
Information Skills 3.   Students recognise what information is needed, locate and obtain it from a range of sources and evaluate, use and share it with others. Students research the history of Australia from the time leading up to Federation, democracy in Australia, local and family history using nonfiction books, CD-ROM, the Internet, email, videos and interviews.
Using Technology 4.   Students select, use and adapt technologies. Students use wordprocessing and desktop publishing for written work.
CD-ROMs for research, creating flow charts/explosion diagrams eg. Inspiration
Spreadsheets and databases for oragnising and sharing information.
Email, the Internet, fax and phone for research, interactive activities and contacting others.
PowerPoint for oral presentations.
Videos/film for dramatic presentations and information.
Thinking Skills 5.   Students describe and reason about patterns, structures and relationships in order to understand, interpret, justify and make predictions. Students plan, organise and create timelines, family trees and databases. They recognise patterns, make predictions and draw conclusions.
They record, review and evaluate their progress and meet deadlines.
They design, devise, evaluate and document their findings.
They conduct self and peer assessment according to negotiated criteria.
6.   Students visualise consequences, think laterally, recognise opportunity and potential and are prepared to test options.
Develops Cultural Understandings 8.   Students understand their cultural, geographic and historical contexts and have the knowledge, skills and values necessary for active participation in life in Australia. Students use literature, timelines, family trees, databases, role-play drama and shared stories to develop an understanding and appreciation of the differing values and contributions made by the various cultural groups within Australia.
Personal Growth/Well Being 11.   Students value and implement practices that promote personal growth and well being. Students use their understandings of the democratic process and ideals to demonstrate the development of skills in:
conflict resolution, peer mediation, negotation, decision-making, peer and self assessment in their everyday dealings in the classroom and school community.

12.   Students are self-motivated and confident in their approach to learning and are able to work individually and collaboratively Students actively participate in group work, discussions and take responsibility for completing their task.

Develops Values, Responsible Behaviour 13.   Students recognise that everyone has the right to feel valued and safe, and, in this regard, understand their rights and obligations and behave responsibly. Students work cooperatively, share information and resources and assist others.
Students use equipment responsibly and effectively.
Research government in Australia in relation to concepts such as Nationalism, national pride, democracy and liberal values.
