What is U3A? / Frequently asked questionsU3A is a self-help, non profit, adult learning movement based on the University of the Third Age that began in France in 1971. Each Australian state now boasts many U3AsThis expression comes from a European belief that our first age is childhood, the second age is as working adults and the third age is when we have reached an age when we may be retired but remain active. As a philosopher once said: “The first age is making it into the world, the second age is making our way in the world and the third age is making sense of it all”. Is U3A a real university? No—not as commonly understood. U3A members share knowledge with each other just for the fun and challenge of learning. U3As have no entry requirements, no exams and no diplomas. Do I need qualifications to join? No! U3A is for everybody. Group leaders are usually people who have gained knowledge of a subject during their lives and have a passion for sharing it with others. Who can attend? Anyone with a desire to learn. U3A members are between 50 and 100 years of age. What topics may be offered at Clarence River U3A? Topics covered may include such diverse subjects as Art, Archaeology, Current Affairs, Computing, Creative Writing, Gardening, History, Photography, Languages, Music Appreciation, Travel, etc. New areas of interest will be welcomed, especially if a volunteer is willing to lead the subject. What form do activities take? Topical forums are held with panels, discussion and question and answer sessions. Class formats depend on the leader and the participants and could be talks, discussions, lectures, or field excursions. Can women join the men's shed? Not at this stage but special 'ladies days' are held through the year to provide some basic maintenance skills and become familiar with electrical tools. When and where are classes held? Classes are held during the day and usually last up to two hours for four weeks to a year. Venues include halls, clubs and private homes. What happens if you join a class but don't like it? You are not obliged to continue. Just a courtesy call to your group leader is appropriate. Other activities? Social activities such as picnics, get-together luncheons, outings and games like tennis or boules may be arranged. What does it cost? U3A gives you excellent value. The first year subscription is $30 single or $50 joint membership, renewal of membership is $25 single or $40 joint. Provided there are places in your chosen classes you may attend as many classes and activities as you wish. A small additional charge may be levied in some courses to cover rent or equipment hire. What is covered by the annual fees? These are used to provide adequate insurance for one thing. They cover the production and posting of our newsletter (the clarion) as well as subsidising new classes and funding some social outings to which everyone is invited. How do I join? GO TO CONTACTS. |
