Group Work Preparation

Name: _______________________

Date Due: ____________________

Background

We now have approximately 8 weeks left to complete this unit. In that time we will need to complete 2 Tasks, one using Robolab and the other a research presentation. As we only have a few Robolab kits we need to work simultaneously on these Tasks. It has been decided that for both Tasks you will be working in the groups containing the same 4 people. The table below may help you understand the process and is expected for the remainder of the term:

TERM 2 (10 Weeks)

Task #2 - ROBOLAB RCX Brick

Time Allocation:

2 weeks using RCX

1 week preliminary

Task #3 - Research/Presentation

Time Allocation:

Remainder of time not working on ROBOLAB

GROUP ROLES

Each group will be made up of different roles. Each of the these roles require different group members to work on different tasks. When choosing your groups it will be profitable to choose the right person for the right job.

ROLE

RESPONSIBLITIES

CO-ORDINATOR

  • Planning
  • Diary/Journal
  • Minutes of Meetings
  • Making sure everyone is on task
  • Making sure deadlines are met

PROGRAMMER/CONSTRUCTOR (x2)

  • Making the Lego model (Task #2) and the Presentation (Task #3)
  • Learning to program and programming the RCX

RESEARCHER/REPORTER

  • Finding all relevant information for the Tasks.
  • Writing the final report for the Tasks.

Activity

For this essential you will need to form your groups and then in those groups complete the following information:

Note: I will remind you that it will be more profitable if your groups are made up of people who suit each role. This may mean selecting someone who is not sitting next to you. Also it is important that every person in the group fills out this information and keeps it for submission at the end the term.

TASK #2 ROBOLAB RCX Brick

In your groups you will need to look at what the RCX Brick can do and decide what you want to design and create. Below list some of the features you would like the final RCX product to do:

In the space below draw a rough sketch of what the group believes the final Lego product will look like:

TASK #3 RESEARCH/PRESENTATION

For the final task you will need to research an area of the robotics industry and with your findings create a report and a presentation, to show to the class. In your groups discuss what area of the robotics industry you would like to research and answer the following questions:

What subject will your report/presentation be on?

What resources will be good to use to research for this task?

What are some good search engines on the Internet to find information?

Name some presentation packages that your group knows of
