You have been employed by the Government as an independent researcher to analyse the effects of IT in businesses. You will need to investigate and present a report on the latest office information technology products, systems and processes.

The class has been broken up into different topics and each of the students should look at a different area of business. Some suggested topics include:

• Modern supermarket IT systems.
• The movement of business to using "Intranets" and LAN's.
• E-commerce using the Internet.
• Modern banking systems.

In this Task, you are required to conduct extensive research and provide a presentation to class on your findings. You are expected to include:

• an evaluation of the system components and elements (hardware, software and people)
• illustrations and explanations of technology products and components
• an explanation of the changes brought about in work practices (e.g. teleworking) as well as the personal and social impact of the technology
• a statement on your personal response to the development and impact of technology in concluding comments
• evidence of investigation supplied by the inclusion of notes, reference list (presented in an approved format), annotations on articles or brochures and questions posed to give direction to the investigation
• a time plan and daily journal
• a report in an approved and negotiated format
• an oral presentation showing evidence of preparation
• information collected from a range of resources, which could include journal, newspaper, electronic (CD-ROM, Internet/www, library) and bound media.

Evidence of planning (e.g. notes, clippings) must be submitted with the final presentation.

Outcome 1: will be demonstrated in how you conduct your research. Keep a record of your activities in your learning log or diary.

Outcome 3: concerns the way you put your report together. Once you have decided on your content, plan headings for your report. These can be changed later but if you have a general structure in mind it will help you to organise your information and check that you have enough information for an interesting report.

Outcome 5: Your report must also be submitted on time, or any delays negotiated in good time with your teacher, if you are to demonstrate this outcome. You also need to have your learning log regularly completed.

Outcome 6: concerns the way you have collected and considered what your information means. It relates to the content you have gathered, communication skills of writing clearly and concisely about your research and why and how you have tackled your task in the way that you have (wants you to describe the information technology systems and processes used in the task set). This outcome again requires logging of your activities and reflective notes of your working time.

Outcome 8: requires you to get actively involved in your assignment, showing that you are motivated to produce your best work and use your time effectively to think about the issues you read about. Once again, keep your learning log up to date with regular notes and observations.

• An evaluation of the Task outlining changes you would make if asked to perform a similar task in the future.
