Unit: Introduction To Web Page Design

Duration of Unit: 6 weeks

The purpose of this unit is to introduce the students to basic web design using Microsoft Frontpage in creating a personal webpage, which they can then utilise to develop their skills further, both in the areas of web design and graphics.

* To examine the elements of website design ie. Layout, graphics, use of hyperlinks, animation, navigation etc.

* To utilise these elements in the creation of a personal website.

* To utilise web tools available both in Frontpage and on the Internet.

* To understand and respect the rules of copyright.

* To use Microsoft Image Composer to create and modify graphics and animations.

* Discuss what constitutes a "good" website.

* Assess websites and evaluate them using checklist.

* Bookmark sites useful in web design. (graphics, web tools etc)

* Create web folders on floppy disk.

* Create folder on H drive in which to save work to be used in web - Child’s name.

* Discuss copyright and its implications when creating websites.

* Introduce MSFrontpage. Use of tools to familiarise how they are used to create web page.

* Saving the elements of the page in appropriate folders in web folder.

* Planning a website using flow chart.

* How to download images from the internet, respecting rules of copyright.

* Use of hyperlinks to link new pages, other websites, email etc.

* Viewing results in browser to check links, thumbnails etc.

* Introduce Microsoft Image Composer. Demonstrate then students to explore using graphics tools to create own or to modify other graphics.

* Save work being composed as a .mic file.

* Save sprites and compositions for the web as .jpg or .gif files.

* Introduce gif animator and demonstrate how animations can be created from a gif image.

* Students to explore use of gif animator.

* Demonstrate how different types of background images can be created using MS Image Composer - borders, images for tiling, whole page images.

* Students create own background images and check results on their webpage.

* Save compositions in .jpg or .gif format.

* Use of date utility to show when page was last updated.

* Use of navigation bars and chart to show links.

* Explore other tools in Frontpage eg. reports, tasks, positioning, etc.

* Examine sites on the internet for webmasters, exploring the tools available to enhance sites and the resources available to learn more about web design.

* Utilise skills learnt and web tools to complete website.

* Discuss uploading using ftp.

* Self evaluation using rubric.

Resources:

* Computer Lab (15 workstations) each with programs MSFrontpage and Image Composer installed.

* Photocopied workbooks for use by each of the students (to be retained by teacher until completion of the unit).

* User profile for the students to use whilst doing this unit.

* A floppy disk for each student to store work (to be retained by teacher until completion of the unit).

Evaluation:

* Self evaluation by students using a rubric.

* Students work and interaction (student/student, student/teacher)

* Teacher self evaluation - appropriateness of unit content and skills required to complete unit.
