Examining The Effects Of Scale

A very simple and efficient way of demonstrating the effects of scale is to use the map location feature which is part of the White Pages website.

The White Pages website is a telephone directory service which mirrors the books of the same name. Their  main site is located at www.whitepages.com.au

We are interested in a particular service which is featured at their site called "where is?" This feature allows the user to enter search details for a particular street map location and then zoom in and out on its position at various scales.

To investigate its use follow the simple procedure below.

Step 1

Go to the "where is?" website at www.whereis.com.au

Step 2

Enter your particular search details.

eg. Mona Street Bankstown NSW

Step 3

A map will appear on the screen. You can center a position on the map using the mouse and you can alter the scale by using the zoom feature underneath the map.
