The history of the video game is an interesting one that has taken place across a range of arcade machines, home consoles, handheld devices and of course the internet. It is also a dynamic and lucrative industry, one that both shapes and reflects the tastes of consumers. People certainly play very different kinds of games than they used to and with the popularity of consoles like the Wii and more family-friendly games, the stereotypical image of the 'gamer' is impossible to define.

In this unit you will look at gaming's 'Golden Age' - the 1980s - and the aspects that make a game 'good'. You will plan and present your own video game using free software and then present it together with a marketing campaign aimed at a target audience.

Task & Final Product
Your task is the produce a video game that corresponds with the time period you have been studying in your 'Worlds of the Past' project.

After investigating the history of gaming, your game can be from any genre (eg adventure, puzzle, platformer, maze) and should contain desirable gaming elements discussed in class. Importantly it must show evidence of research and understanding of aspects of your time period.
During this unit you will produce:

  • A video game on CD
  • A gamebox cover design
  • An instruction manual
  • A 30 second trailer advertising your game
  • A summary presentation of your game and your learning achievements
  • A web page tying together all the above
