2003 hare and hound handicap results

[ 2004 Results | 2003 Results | 2002 Results | 2001 Results ]

Hare and Hound is our monthly 6km handicap race. We race on the first Saturday of each month starting at 7:00am from the mouth of Oxley Creek, going up the Brisbane River to turn at the Indooroopilly Bridge and returning to the start. Handicaps are based on the personal best time from the previous 6 months. Members of other clubs are most welcome to attend. First three across the line win CHOCOLATE! We follow each Hare and Hound with a BYO Breakfast BBQ.

Results for the month December 2003 (in finish order)

21 boats on the water. The showery conditions must have kept members of other clubs away. Tide was incoming near the top.

This H&H was special due to the number of juniors (7) having their first go at the 6km event. Doug Catran, Jacque Beaver, Martin Moloney, Mark Kerr, Geoff Urquhart and Grant Cook were the big improvers with very good PBs. Dave Shrimpton managed to shave another few seconds off too.

Gerrard deserves a special mention for coming home dry after having his first go at K1.

Emma Moloney, Fiona Stagg, and Emma Faulkner also deserve special mention for supervising their juniors on the course. Thanks too, to Peter Beatton for driving the safety boat.

Results for the month November 2003 (in finish order)

22 boats on the water in fine weather conditions. However, boat traffic made paddling difficult in spots. Tide was running out and quite good for fast times (for those that started at their designated times at least). BCI is considering a late fee (according to this month's time keeper).

The fastest ever Hare and Hound time was established by Denise and Paul (eclipsing Dave Provan's K1 time by 6 seconds). Sal Gardner's recent European paddling must have assisted her all time PB. Nathan seems to be back on his game with a 6 mth PB.

December will be the last H&H for the year so please bring along something for a BBQ breakfast.

Results for the month October 2003 (in finish order)

21 boats on the water. 7 personal bests. Several newcombers - 1 new to Brisbane Canoeing - others from Sandgate and Indooroopilly. Beautiful paddling weather with an outflowing tide making a quick run home.

The recently invalided Peter Beatton manned the stopwatch ably assisted by his co-invalid Janine. (At the BV100 these two learnt a valuable lesson about walking around camp sites at night - a lesson resulting in a ruptured archilles tendon on PB and a broken radius on JG.)

17 boats on the water. Excellent tidal conditions - top of the tide at the start. 8 all time PBs - our juniors Mearon, Christian and Jacque doing particularly well with 4-11 minutes off! James must be enjoying his new boat and Mike E is setting himself some challenges for future handicaps.

Results for the month August 2003 (in *adjusted finish order)

Thanks very much to Dave S. who did the recording, with assistance from Maria, and got the results to me. We had one capsize and lots of assistance... hence the adjusted times which sit somewhere between guesses and estimates. So, unfortunately not much can be done to make them accurate. :( Well done to Emma M. and Fee who established a good K2 time. We welcomed Mark S. from West End CC. Mark K. established a new time in his beautiful new boat. Chris S. gave his PB a good running over and Mike E. at last knocked down his PB after being so close in the last two months.

The following is based on Dave's observations - so read on and make your plans for PBs in the later H&H Handicaps for this year.

14 boats paddled in very slow conditions being the last dregs of a very low outgoing tide. The weather was chilly but sunny and the water flat.

The good news is that the last 4 H&H of the year promise excellent fast tidal conditions with November and December the pick. September is favourable but not perfect conditions with the top of tide at about 7:13am. Top of tide is good but dead water seems to slow things a little. October is good too, about an hour after top of a smallish tide. Incoming tide would be faster and bigger tide would be better but still good. November is record breaking conditions at about the midpoint of a large (0.25-2.18) incoming tide. December is similar and probably the best tide for a H&H in 2003.

But as was said about a famous Australian fast bowler recently, "He never gave in to the conditions." And there is also this from Dave, "I should have added, 'good tidal conditions won't help if Mirimar comes through the middle of the fleet'".

Results for the month July 2003 (in finish order)

28 boats on the water - an excellent show up for a cold winter's morning... Conditions: Bottom of the tide, but calm.

Established times were set by a few ring-ins and a new member. Granny Sal was given a generous handicap and happily took the chocolate block! (We'll have to get tougher on the handicaps for these ICC paddlers when they first come down.) Lisa Collins had her first go at H&H and set a good target for next time. The 'super fit' duo of Shane and Chris wet their boats for the first time in what must be years and are promising to return each month - as there was no mention of paddling between H&H that's an ambitious training schedule ;-).

James after more than 6 months away put himself back on the board with a sub 30.

6 month and all time personal bests were deservedly achieved in these conditions. Well done to Larni (44 sec), Jenni (26 sec), Fiona (25 sec), Chris S (15 sec), and despite the ragging he was given Peter B (1 sec).

2 seconds outside their PBs were Jacqui and Mike. Christian had a potential PB (by minutes) prevented by a little swim at the end. Swimming champ Emma momentarily decided to retry her old sport too. ;)

Results for the month June 2003 (in finish order)

21 boats on the water - great to see these numbers which are very good for the Winter months. Still, there are a few who weren't but ought to have been there. ;-)

Well done to Christian who smashed his PB by 8 and a half minutes! Mearon had her first go at Hare and Hound and beat the time we set her by nearly 3 minutes. Jenni winged and wined about the handicap she had, then took 50 seconds off her PB. Well, I wonder how much she'll winge next month when the handicap is further reduced?!!! Ah well, the chocolate she won for 3rd place might slow her down a second or two! Damian finished off the personal best setters by removing another 9 seconds from his time.

Donna came down from Indooroopilly and established a new time as it's been a while since the last one.

We welcome some of our new members (who it seems we weren't too kind on setting their times this month). Dave, Craig and David started paddling only within the last couple of months and have set themselves good times to beat next month.

Mike E, Dave S and Mannie look to be back on track with times today close to their PBs. We discovered today that "it's on" between Doug and Mike E. (From Doug's point of view anyway.) Bring it on guys - we love a bit of competition to hot things up! Well done all.

Results for the month May 2003 (in finish order)

25 boats were on the water for the May 2003 Hare and Hound. An all time best recorded time of 25:27 was recorded by Dave Provan (recently selected in the Australian Canoe Marathon Team). Well done Dave! Perhaps we'll see a sub 25 next month!

We welcomed along our Lourdes Hill CC visitors including Danni Saint who took 6 seconds from her last time. Michael Beaver and Chris Sanderson also came along for their first taste of H&H.

Poor old Peter Beatton can't win - his all time PB is a second outside the 30 minute mark (something he conveniently blames on the timekeeper and web publisher - very dangerous indeed) and he just recorded a second over his 6 month PB. Some of us think he just needs to work harder!

Personal bests were recorded by: Damian Catran, Grant Cook, Mark Jensen, Danni Saint and Mat Sinclair. Jacqui Beaver took out a K1 and smashed her TK1 time by 27 minutes and 34 seconds!! Graeme Wynn took out a TK1 and took a second off his fastest ever SK1 time (something this timekeeper missed on the day). Janice on the other hand didn't manage to beat her SK1 time with a TK1 (drat). She's still quicker than husband Mike's TK1 time and beat him over the line this time though she's got a way though to go to get his Tidemark time. Mike seems very happy in the Tidemark. ;-)

Results for the month April 2003 (in finish order)

30 boats on the water! - perhaps one of the biggest ever - at least in the memory of current club members.

Several juniors had their debut and we welcomed three visitors from Lourdes Hill College CC. Well done Jacqui - nearly 11 years old and paddled 6km! Christian was out there in his new boat - we'll be looking for some great times as he gets used to that high seat. Xavia got the BIG chocolate. Both Emmas, Fiona and Nathan had personal best times. Martin and Mat continue to improve. The editor and timekeeper is a little worried about Mat - that time is getting a bit too low for comfort!

And a report from President Dave (who manned the stop watch): It was a humid, warm and showery morning that greeted the 14 intrepid paddlers who had gathered to pit their skills against a tide that was fairly racing in. New member Grant Cook was looking cautiously confident, (even though it was first time in a TK1), after we finally found somewhere to put his legs. Jenny Watt screamed off the mark at 0.00, straight into the middle of the river, after receiving corrected tidal information from a variety of people. The Dobsons were looking formidable in their new craft, which hadn't been scutineered. The rest of the start was fairly accurate, when new member Mat Sinclair turned up late with the Regal (TK1) and set about the usual adjustments. Start time came and went for the new member dynamic duo of Grant and Mat, so Dan Barber headed off up the creek on a search and recovery mission. The K1'ers Paul and Mark Jensen were champing at the bit and headed off before the new members regained their sense of direction. The aforementioned Dobsons with their questionable craft, took out line honours, with Mike D slashing 5 minutes off his PB. The handicapping proved accurate again as close finishes kept the timekeeper's stress levels to a pleasant extreme. All racers handled the strong tide to their advantage, as just about everyone came in with a 3 or 6 month PB - except for Mark Jensen, however, who was doing his late version of a post Christmas "Pudding Paddle". (Editor's note - I am not sure how that fits with taking 10 seconds off your PB!)

14 starters, 4 established times, 3 all time personal bests and a 6 month personal best.

BTW Some of these times are BETTER than those given on the day - only 'cos 'someone' has trouble with 'time subtraction'!
