New Junior Program ReportA report written by a member of the junior program, Term 4, 2003.Thanks so much to Emily for writing this report. Now... how to get some of the adults to write things for the web news???...! (Ed.) I first found out about Brisbane Canoeing, from my friend Jacqui. I decided to go to 'Come and Try' to see if I liked it. Well straight away when I got on the water, I knew I would be back the next week. The first day we learnt all about the types of kayaks, and did some safety drills. The next Saturday my Dad (who had decided to have a go at kayaking also) and I got to meet Emma and Fiona, who were going to be coaching us for the rest of the year. After a couple of weeks in the TK, Emma and Fiona decided to move me into a K1. "WOW!", it was definitely more unstable when I got in, but when I got moving it was a lot better. I was in the K1 for a couple of weeks and quite enjoyed it. In my 3rd week of the K1, we got to paddle out into the river. I was about 500m away from the creek when I fell out. Everyone else had gone ahead, besides Emma. She told me, if I couldn't get back in the boat then I would have to swim to the closest pontoon. When I heard that, it definately gave me the 'incentive', to get back in my kayak. Emma told me to put one of my hands in her kayak, and one in mine. I was then able to heave myself up and into the kayak. Well, I don't know how I did it, but I did, and just between you and me I was pretty proud of myself. There was so much water in my boat that every time I went over a tiny ripple in the water the nose of the kayak would go under the water. After that, we caught up with the rest of the group, emptied out my kayak, and paddled back to the creek. Kayaking is now the highlight of my week and my dad and I love getting up early on Saturday mornings so we can get out on the water. It's great fun and I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone to at least give it a go! By Emily Bradbury Young Junior Program Commenced 11th OctoberBrisbane Canoeing commenced a program designed for young juniors 9-13 years of age. The program is being coached by our three new coaches, Emma, Emma and Fiona, (currently undergoing their qualifications). Interested parents are still welcome to call Jonathan on 3878 7165 for further details. We aim to be running these programs throughout 2004.
We welcome to the program: Emily, Maddie, Caroline, Geordie, Nick and Chris. (Jacqueline was absent on the first day - and Chloe and Daniel have since joined.) Baden (one of the parents) is paddling too (and now in a K1). Emma, Fiona and Emma are having a ball coaching this group. This page last updated Friday 19 December 2003 |
