I've participated in Come and Try. What now?

Trial Canoeist Insurance (included in your Come and Try session) allows a maximum of 3 paddles as a non-member. Brisbane Canoeing conducts C&T only once per month.

Join the club and check out our calendar and events where various club activities are listed including Beginning Adult Coaching.

My child is a member. May I paddle too?

Of course. Several of our club members started because they wanted to join the fun rather than stand on the pontoon watching their kids. You may need to book into a Come and Try session.

Otherwise, it may be OK to join in with the kids session to get started. Ask the coach, as it will depend on numbers attending and then activity being undertaken. You will beed to complete and sign the form as per Come and Try and pay the C&T fee (as we need to pass on the insurance).

Of course, if you are also a member, it may be appropriate for you to paddle with the kids' group as a assistant to the coach. Talk with the coach about this.

I have friends who have kids who might like to paddle. What do I do to encourage them to get started.

Brisbane Canoeing has a proud history of getting juniors started and is always looking to increase the numbers of junior paddlers. Many of our junior recruits find out about us from current members and their parents.

Discuss this with the Coaching Coordinator and check out the current and future junior programs.

I want to do more for the club. How do I go about this?

Brisbane Canoeing Inc now offers a social membership. It allows you to be a financial member of the club, but does not cover you for insurance for paddling activities.

There are many opportunities to assist the club.

  • Attend our club meetings.
  • We hold occassional working bees to fix boats, clean up the shed, perform grounds maintenance etc.
  • Opportunities exist to represent the club as a delegate to the various QCI committees.
  • The club runs several events throughout the year. These always need volunteers.
  • Timekeeping and judging assistance is always appreciated at the monthly Hare and Hound event.
  • Each year all positions on the executive are available at the AGM!
  • Encourage others to paddle. Tell them about Come and Try, our junior programs, this web site.

How can I request coaching?

Yes. There are several programs available. BCI offers regular coaching programs for juniors (which depend to a certain extent on numbers).

Coaching for adults is also available. An informal beginner adults session is offered on Thursday mornings at 6:00am for members. Other training is available from time to time. Discuss this with the Coaching Coordinator.

Can I bring a friend to paddle?

Yes. It may be best to do this through a Come and Try session - especially if your friend is new to paddling.

If you wish to take a friend out paddling at some other time, please discuss this with a member of the club executive. The usual Come and Try forms and fees will apply if your friend is not a member of another club. This is necessary for insurance coverage to apply.

Also, any paddler 14 years or under MUST wear a PFD at anytime whilst paddling. This applies to non-swimmers, and anyone not feeling confident. PFDs are available in various sizes in the club shed.

What do I do if any equipment needs repair?

Repairs need to be notified to the Equipment Officer ASAP after damage has occured or been noticed. Please report which particular equipment needs repair, the nature of the damage/maintenance required, what happened etc.

The club relies on the boats and other equipment being in good order at all times.

Brisbane Canoeing operates with a 'no-blame' policy if due care has been taken.

I am member of another club. May I join Brisbane Canoeing Inc as a secondary club membership?

Yes. You would not need to pay the affiliation components of the membership fee. Discuss this with our Treasurer.

How do I look after club equipment?

See these pages for tips.

How do I get a key to the club shed?

Keys for members are prioritised to those who store a boat in the shed. However, others may apply. Key holders must be over 15 years of age.

All key holders must undergo a check of skills and knowledge before being issued a key. This ensures the paddlers has the paddling skill, and knowledge of local water conditions to be safe when paddling. Also, knowledge of club protocols regarding equipment stowage, and security are expected and must be followed.

Key holders pay a refundable key deposit.

How can I store my boat in the club shed?

Discuss this with the Equipment Officer. There is an annual fee for private boat storage. Club and private boats are covered by insurance whilst stored in the club shed and for limited transportation on the club trailer.

What are the different paddling strokes?

The Australian Canoeing Inc web site 'Getting Started' page has a comprehensive section on paddling strokes.
