current and past news[ Recreation reports | Race reports ] 2004 AGMWe have just had the 2004 AGM of Brisbane Canoeing. It was disappointing that we only had six people there... ah well. A couple of things from the meeting tonight- President's Report2003 was another good year for Brisbane Canoeing, with membership hitting 60, a huge increase in our Junior programs, successful running of a number of events and acquisition of more boats and equipment, while still keeping our financial head out of the Brisbane River. Geoff Urquhart has continued a great performance on the books and keeping up with the many changing regulatory responsibilities of our Club. We will be voting tonight on such matters that Geoff has brought to light. His budgeting has enabled our account to end the year with a healthy balance. Peter Beatton continues to organize our events to a top notch standard, and has been successful in co-ordinating large numbers of member volunteers. This input from volunteer members is the lifeblood of our Club. Peter published boat care and maintenance guidelines throughout the year, and this has helped with boat repair costs to some degree, but we need to always to be mindful of the fragile nature of the boats we paddle. Mike and Janice Dobson kept the recreational paddling days alive with some fun activities and made sure we were well fed at our events, with a good range of culinary delights. They moved well into the position, which was vacated by Geoff Weston who went to Ethiopia in July as a volunteer pre- school teacher. Geoff's letters from Addis Ababah are well read on our website. Jonathan continues to spend a huge amount of time and energy on this club, and the results really showed through again in 2003. The increased membership was largely due to Jonathan's organization of junior programs. Junior paddling was identified as an opportunity for our club in 2002, and Jonathan has brought it to reality. He is largely responsible for the Club contribution for 6 members, including 3 juniors, to commence their Level 1 kayak coaching studies. The 3 girls are now organising the Junior programs and Peter and Jonathan now ensure that usual training paddles have a lot more purpose. The club benefits from this energy spent on coaching by turning out paddlers with better technique and fitness, as well as lifting the competitive results of the club at all levels. Jonathan updated the format of the website throughout the year and continues to do a great job as web master. Members have done well to provide volunteers to run Come and Try days and the Hare and Hound. The C&Ts are a good pool from which we get new members, and the Hare and Hound is still a fun way for new starters to get into racing. Our volunteer members continue to make these events enjoyable for new starters. Going forward, there are a number of issues we need to address. Not the least of these is safety. The current practice of children crossing Graceville Avenue, with boats, in unregulated traffic flow, cannot continue. Approaches and subsequent meetings were held with the local councillor and council employees for the location of a pontoon on Oxley Creek, adjacent to the football fields. Council's response was a lack of funds. The local councillor has been approached a number of times since, to discuss alternative measures, without success. It should be a priority of each club member to provide support to the executive so that we can have this dangerous situation resolved in 2004. On a lighter note, the Club now has a few members who own , or have an interest in sea kayaking. Several of our members attended sea kayaking courses throughout 2003. With some great spots around Moreton Bay, it surprises me that there are not more organized sea kayaking weekends run by QC affiliated clubs. Maybe some of our enthusiasts can take advantage of the asset we have on our doorstep, and expand this part of our club. Regards, David Barber, President Election of office bearers: Secretary- No nominations, so we're hoping to find someone soon!
This job only requires the taking and recording of minutes and forwarding
a list of decisions for publishing on the web site. Our next General Meeting will be held after the Hare and Hound on the 3rd of April at 9:00am. The club will put on a sausage sizzle breakfast in the hope that this will encourage people to stay and take part in the meeting. We need to have more nominations to fill the Hare and Hound roster
for the first Saturday of each month. Please let me know if you can fill
a place. Upcoming events: Sponsorship from Toll (added 21/02/04)Brisbane Canoeing gratefully accepted a $250 donation from Toll on 21
February 2004. 2004 AGMThe AGM for 2004
will be on March 17 at 7:00pm. Geoff Weston's Newsletters from EthiopiaThis page was created to share with our club members the letters sent by Geoff who is currently working in Ethiopia as a volunteer Kindergarten teacher - quite a change from his TAFE teaching career. Geoff left Australia recently for the 1 year position. Christmas Party on the Deck at # 34 (added 29/12/03)Club members became landlubbers on Sunday 21 December for their Christmas party. Around 25 members, family and friends gathered at Jonathan's home at Indooroopilly to celebrate Christmas. The party included a BBQ, a swim in Jonathan and Sarah's pool, the odd beverage and much conversation. Naturally topics of conversation included kayaking triumphs and achievements during 2003 and aspirations for 2004. During the afternoon a presentation for the Junior Club Person of the Year for 2003 was made to Jacqueline Beaver for her contribution to the club, participation and sportsmanship. See the story below... In all the party was a great success and most entertaining. Thank you to Jonathan and Sarah for allowing the club to impose for an afternoon. The renovations and backyard blitz look great! Thanks to Mike Egert for this contribution. (Ed) And a note from Jonathan... It was very much a pleasure to host the Christmas party this year. We all had a lovely time - and it gave us a good try out of the new deck ready for having our families at Christmas time. (Yes, there was a minor ulterior motive!) Thank you everyone for coming along and for bringing the various salads and desserts etc to share and make a lovely club activity. So... who's hosting next year??? 2003 Junior Club Person of the Year (added 21/12/03)At the Christmas Party the club announced the winner of the 2003 Junior Club Person of the Year. Congratulations to Jacqueline Beaver who now has a trophy to proudly display at home. The award was instigated in 2001 to encourage junior input into the activities of our canoe club, and specifically, for activity that assists Brisbane Canoeing fulfill its aims. The criteria for the award this year were: Contribution to the club, Participation in activities and Sportsmanship. A points system was used to decide the award between our junior paddlers and the top four places was VERY CLOSE! Brisbane Canoeing is feeling very proud of its juniors and their contribution to the club's many facets including participation, coaching, and volunteering. Well done to all our juniors in 2004. Announcing Junior Programs for Term 1 2004Invitations are extended for juniors aged 8-18 years to participate in our junior coaching programs starting in school Term 1, 2004. Information on these programs can be found on the Juniors page. Damien Catran's Adventures on South AfricaDamien's dad, Doug, wrote these articles whilst Damien was competing in South Africa in 2003. New Pontoon (No... not one near the club house)Thanks Dave S. for the following... If anyone's interested, there is a shiny new pontoon a couple of 100m upstream of Sherwood Rd bridge, with a shiny pathway up to a shiny new building in the shiny new park there. All looks close to being finished. The pontoon is metal so should be a bit more fire resistant than the now melted Jindalee one. Should make a nice stopping point for C&T. Get someone to go up early and fire up the Barbie and then stop for a sausage sizzle and a cuppa then return. Queensland Canoeing Web Site LaunchedQueensland Canoeing Inc recently their new web site.
