Unit Objectives:
Ecosystems & Human Impact

KNOWLEDGE of SUBJECT MATTER:

  1. define key terms used in this unit

  2. understand the importance of the one way flow of energy through an ecosystem

  3. recall how matter is recycled in an ecosystem by interconnected water, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphate cycles

  4. understand the role of succession and eutrophication as mechanisms of change in an ecosystem

  5. recall the impact of introduced species, urbanisation and agriculture on ecosystems

  6. recall specific examples of the use of "biological control"

  7. understand how an organism may be adapted to its environment (e.g. mangrove, temperate rainforest, rock platform, estuary or coral reef)

  8. list the main features that could influence the distribution, density and abundance of an organism in a community

SIMPLE SCIENTIFIC PROCESSES:
  1. interpret energy flow data from different ecosystems

  2. investigate and discuss the relationships that occur between organisms and their surroundings in a particular ecosystem

  3. construct food chains and webs, and biomass pyramids

  4. contrast the cycling of matter with the linear flow of energy through an ecosystem

  5. suggest causes for given changes in communities

  6. compare and evaluate the effects of various methods of pest control

  7. calculate the cumulative impact of pesticides in a community

  8. discuss the effects of introducing species into an environment

COMPLEX REASONING PROCESSES:
  1. relate theory of energy flow and matter recycling to field observations

  2. critically evaluate data by comparing two different ecosystems

  3. make inferences about discrepancies in observed and predicted field data

  4. evaluate the effect of human population increase on natural communities

  5. evaluate the possible environmental impact of a proposed human activity on an ecosystem

  6. critically examine current environmental issues

  7. critically evaluate the effects of introducing species into an environment
