Unit Objectives:
Introduction to Biology

KNOWLEDGE of SUBJECT MATTER:

  1. define key terms used in this unit

  2. recall the type of study that is involved in a variety of specialisations within the biological sciences

  3. explain the significance and meaning of each of the levels of organisation of living things

  4. distinguish between living and non-living things

  5. recall the differences between being alive and being dead

  6. give examples of life processes

  7. recall the meaning of each of the steps in the scientific process

  8. distinguish the significant differences between asexual and sexual reproduction

  9. recall and describe the "main areas of concern" for Biologists

SIMPLE SCIENTIFIC PROCESSES:
  1. develop hypotheses from data

  2. distinguish between control and experimental condition

  3. describe possible extraneous variables in an experimental condition

  4. interpret data from a controlled experiment

  5. present quantitative and qualitative data in a variety of ways

  6. distinguish between different types of autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition

  7. distinguish between various areas of concern for Biologists

COMPLEX REASONING PROCESSES:
  1. critically analyse data involving a current biological issue

  2. evaluate the appropriateness of scientific procedures

  3. design a complex scientific investigation
