Red Wattle Bird
(Anthochaera carunculata)


Description
The Red Wattle Bird has two small red flaps of skin under its ears called 'wattles', which gives it its name.
It looks like a large brown honey eater with a long tail. Its head is a dark brown colour, with white streaks passing through it. Its underparts are brown and it has a yellow belly.

Size
It is between 31-39 cm in size.

Voice
It has a  low harsh voice, when it wants to frighten other  birds away from its feeding places, but it can also sing musically.

Food
It eats nectar and berries..

Nest
It nest is made from leaves, twigs and grass and lined with animal hair and soft bark. It is often about 2 metres from the ground in trees and/or in bushes.

Behaviour
It is a very aggressive bird, and chases other birds who get near their feeding places. It frightens them by making loud harsh squawks.
