Common Brown - Heteronympha merope

The Common Brown butterfly has a wingspan of about 60mm. It can be found in the temperate parts of South Australia in grassy woodland and forest, and in gardens around Adelaide. On hot days, it may be seen around garden sprinklers. It prefers a moist areas where its foodplants, which include a wide variety of grasses, remain in a green condition.  The foodplants include both native and non-native grasses. One of its favourites is kangaroo grass, but the female will also lay its eggs on lawn grass.
