South Australian Birds

Activity 4 - Working with the text

Using your notes, you are now going to use Publisher to write a Fact Sheet on your bird that another student can read and understand. Before you start, look at the following pages and think about whether the information is easy to read and understand. Ask yourself the following questions as you look at each page.

  • What are the things that help me to read and understand the information?
  • What are the things that hinder me from reading and understanding the information?
Echidna Information Goanna Information
Frogmouth Fact Sheet Echidna Information
Emu Information Cockatoo Information

Now look at the following page, which is a good example of a Fact Sheet

The Weebill - Australia's smallest bird.

It has:

  • plenty of headings with the text straight underneath to help people find the information they are looking for.
  • plenty of room between the headings and the information above, so that the headings are easy to see.
  • pictures that don't get in the way of the reading.
  • plenty of white space so that the information stands out.
  • lines that are not too long or too short for easy reading.
  • a font without serifs (little feet) that is of a good size, shape and thickness for the headings and a different font with serifs that is easy to read, for the rest of the text.
    • (with serifs, without serifs)
  • text that is aligned to the left for easier reading.
  • no words in UPPERCASE text, no underlining, no words in bold, hardly any italics, which are all things that make text hard to read.
  • a white background with a dark coloured text which a good combination for easy reading.
These are important things to take into consideration when you are constructing your Fact Sheet.
