Audience

The target audience for this unit of work is year 4/5 middle primary classes. The reason for designing the unit for this level is that tessellations are already a component of the middle primary Mathematics curriculum. Using the information and communication technology (ICT) resources to support this area of the curriculum is the new aspect. Use of the ICT facilities also allowed further integration of the Visual Arts and Design areas of the curriculum.

The students at LNPS are generally interested and involved in most areas of the curriculum and their enthusiasm for the ICT aspects of the curriculum is certainly evident. Many students have access to quality technology resources at home and this is one reason for creating an on-line unit of work which can be accessed from home.

The staff in this area of the school have taught a similar unit to this one in the past but have not yet incorporated the technology to this extent. The skill levels of the classroom teachers is quite good and all were willing to attend training to extend these skills.

 The use of many of the Microsoft Office products within the unit was chosen in order to maintain compatibility with classroom and common home resources.

There are a small number of students in this area of the school working on negotiated curriculum plans (NCP). There are also some students with English as a Second Language and quite a number who are bilingual particularly in Greek or Italian.
