This is a Southern Right Whale coming out of the water.
This action is called "breaching".
There were whalers in South Australia on Kangaroo Island and at Victor Harbor
long before the official founding of the colony of South Australia in 1836.
Whales were hunted and killed for their blubber, for whalebone, and for
ambergris.

Here are some of the answers people sent in.
The students from the Muddy Backwaters think it is a humpback whale doing a spot of spyhopping, meaning having a bit of a look around. Humpback whales call to each other under the water. Their calls sound like songs. This humpback would be visiting the Great Australian Bight Marine Park for a holiday. This protected area in part of South Australia's waters.
The puzzle this week is the Southern Right Whale as it has barnacles over its head. Many people go to Victor Harbor area and the Great Australia Bight to whale watch. At Victor there is a whale museum and a tourist track to go whale watching on Granite Island.
We have looked at some books and the SA whale site to help us. We think the whale is a Southern Right Whale- they often visit our waters in winter near Victor Harbor and near the bight. Some of us thought it might have been a sperm whale although it doesn't seem to have much white on them.
The answer for this week is the southern right whale, which can be followed via a trail around the South Australian coast. By visiting the places on the trail we will see the southern right whale, as it migrates past. Sometimes we even get to see births and young calves.
The picture this week was a whale. We can see whales off the coast of South Australia at Victor Harbor. They have the whale watching centre there too. The whale watching season is coming up. July is a good time to visit Victor Harbor to see the whales. They come into our waters to have their young. They must think it is a safe place.
