equation
The basic approach is as follows:

assume P (x,y)
is any point on the locus

draw a sketch
-
write down
a mathematical statement that is true for P (e.g. AP = 7)

rewrite the
mathematical statement as an equation involving the variables x and y
-
simplify the
equation
