The late 17th and 18th Century England saw a tremendous increase in the number of persons jailed, as an establishment upper class struggled to maintain order and their own position. Their actions were largely targeted towards the lower classes and unemployed . The same process was also used to remove political enemies.

 

 

Sentenced To This

 

Below is an pen and ink drawing of the inside of one of the ship hulks, which were kept floating in the river Thames for convicts and 'transportees' who  waited to be shipped to Australia.
