Parties to the Antarctic Treaty have adopted a Protocol which provides for comprehensive protection of Antarctica. The Madrid Protocol was adopted in 1991 in response to proposals that the wide range of provisions relating to protection of the Antarctic environment should be harmonised in a comprehensive and legally binding form. It draws on and updates the Agreed Measures as well as subsequent Treaty meeting recommendations relating to protection of the environment.

The Antarctica Project is the only conservation organization in the world that works exclusively for Antarctica. We lead the domestic (U.S.) and international campaigns to protect Antarctica's pristine wilderness and environment. Internationally, we lead the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC), comprised of two hundred and forty member groups in fifty countries. ASOC works to ensure that the environment comes first when decisions are made under the Antarctic Treaty System -- the international body that governs Antarctica.
