ActiveX

The Internet programming language developed by Microsoft which competes with Java.

 

AltaVista

A very commonly used Internet search engine.

 

Analog

The type of signals used by the telephone system.

 

ARPAnet

The first network beginning the Internet was developed by the USA in 1969.

 

Au

The country code for Australia.

Baud Rate

The signalling rate of a computer or the rate at which communication software operates.

 

bps

Bits per Second (abbreviation) BPS is used to measure modem speed.

 

Browser

Software which allows you to explore other computers on the Internet.

 

Cache

Stores copies of pages to reduce Internet traffic.

 

Cookie

Information stored on your computer about a web site that you have visited.

Domain Name System

Firewall

A computer system that sits between the Internet and a private network, preventing direct communication.

 

FTP

File transfer protocol.  A standard or protocol for transfering files.  Also used as a label for a software tool which downloads files from the Internet.

 
Gopher Software which navigates the Internet using a menu system. Top

Host

The computer which your modem connects to that links you to the Internet.

 

HTTP

Hypertext transfer protocol.

 

HTML

Hypertext markup language.

 

Hypertext

Text which acts as links (hyperlinks) to other web sites.

 

Internet

Communities of people who choose to record some of their   knowledge and history as information archives of the World Wide Web.

 

IP Addresses

Numerical addresses which are the equivalent of domain names.

 

IRC

Internet Relay Chat

 

ISDN

Integrated Services Digital Network. This is a permanent telephone link to the Internet.

 

ISP

Internet Service Providers.  Seller of Internet time and connection kits.
