Refining Your Search

You are now going to do a search using altavista.com

Altavista uses signs such as “”, + -  * to refine your search.  Altavista Search Rules

Key in the URL  http://www.altavista.com/

Once you are in altavista, change the language in the dropdown menu on the right-hand side of your screen to English.

It is sunny Saturday morning and you have arranged to go surfing at Noosa. However, you want to see what the surf is like first.

Our first search will be on surfing in Australia on the Sunshine Coast, specifically at Noosa.

Main Beach, Noosa Heads

If we key in surfing, we will get approximately 1 934 083 sites.

If we key in Australia, we will get approximately 11 885 930 sites.

If we key in Sunshine Coast, we will get approximately 76 169 sites.

If we key in surfing in Australia on the Sunshine Coast Noosa, we are asking the search engine to find everything it can about surfing in general, Australia in general, sunshine in general, coasts in general, beaches in general.  Such as search request will give you approximately 39 330 sites and that can be a bit waste of time.

Therefore, we will try to narrow it down.  Our aim is to reduce it to under 120 sites.  More sites does not mean more efficiency in searching.  The aim is to narrow it to relevant sites only.

We might try the following search request:

+“Australia” +“Noosa” +”Sunshine Coast” +”surfing”

We have narrowed it down to 379 web sites.

Now we might try:

+”Australia” + “Sunshine Coast” +”Noosa surfing”

We have 3 sites.  The first site might be:

Noosanetcafe : physical surfing links

Noosa, Noosanetcafe, Noosa's Leading Internet Cafe, and Internet Service Provider, Reseller...
URL: www.noosanetcafe.com.au/physical/

When we visit this site, we find a link to Aussie Surfing Sites and we elect to click on the Sunshine Coast Surf Report which redirects us to another link in which there is a surf cam.

http://www.coastalwatch.com/cam.asp?cam=500

We then choose Australia, Noosa Heads, and wait for the live robotic video to activate so that we can have an on-the-spot viewing of the surf at Noosa Heads.  To the right of the live videocam, there is the current surf report.

The right-hand side of your screen looks like this – full of information and further links:
