Types of Search Engines

So far, we have been practicing maneuvering around web pages using links, finding specific information, copying pictures from web pages into our word documents.

Now we are going to look at search engines in order to make effective searches.

 TASK 1 FOR YOUR RECORDS:

Open a Word document and save it as search engines.

Copy and paste the search engines to your document, so that it looks like this:

TASK 2 FOR YOUR RECORDS:

Read and then copy the following into your Word document:

Keyword or Crawler-type Search Engines

They are lists or guides to Internet materials compiled by robot or spider programs. If you are looking for a very specific piece of information, this is the type of search engine you can try.  Examples of the search engines in this group are following:

·       AltaVista

·        Excite

·        HotBot

·        InfoSeek

Meta Crawler-type Search Engines

The search engine that searches multiple search engine databases concurrently and present the combine results.   Examples of this kind of search engine are:

·        Ask Jeeves search 5 search engines (SE)

·        Dogpile search 12 SE, 5 Usenet, 2 FTP, 3 News

·        MetaCrawler search 6 SE

·        Savvy Search search 19 SE in over 20 languages

 

Catalogue or Directory-type Search Engines

Contains catalogue or directory of Internet materials, arranged by subject or material types. This type of the search engine is suitable for any one who is quite new to the Internet environment and does not know where and how to start the search. The directory will assist them to browse around the Internet.  Examples of the search engines in this group include:

·          Magellan

·          Power Search

·          WWW Virtual Library

·          Yahoo

 

 

TASK 3 FOR YOUR RECORDS:

Insert a four-column table into your Word document.  Use font size 12 and adjust your column widths accordingly:

You will insert a tick P in the appropriate column beside the search engine. 

Place your cursor in the cell in which you want the tick to appear.

The tick is found in the menu Insert - Symbol – Change the font within the Symbol menu to Windings 2.  On the second row of Windings 2 you will see a P . Click on Insert and then Close.
