PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE
This unit is taught after the core units 1 (The Computer
as a Desktop Publishing Tool) and 2 (The Computer as a Data-management Tool), so that the
students have already used the following:
 | Word |
 | Publisher |
 | Paint |
 | Digital Camera |
 | Intranet |
 | Internet |
 | Microsoft NetMeeting |
Therefore, it would be anticipated that teachers would
have had experience in Word, PowerPoint, Digital Camera, Paint, Intranet and the Internet.
As well as these skills, teachers will need to have conducted a NetMeeting previously, or
else be prepared to conduct one.
Top
SCHOOL
EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR THIS UNIT:
 | The Intranet |
 | Access to the Internet |
 | Scanner |
 | Twenty-five computers |
 | Printer |
 | Digital Camera |
 | Datashow |
 | Microsoft NetMeeting |
 | Word |
 | Paint |
 | PowerPoint |
 | Video Player |
In this unit, the teachers role is both a teacher
and a facilitator. The Problem-solving approach is being encouraged and expanded and is
incorporated in learning outcomes in this unit of work while students use the Internet.
Sections of work will incorporate the constructivist theory, and authentic, life
situations will form the basis of the learning. Existing knowledge and experiences of
students will be used as foundations on which future knowledge and experiences can be
incorporated. Interactive learning will also be incorporated in order to motivate the
learners and improve learning. Oliver and Herrington (1995:2) wrote that the environment
for learning should be one in which "the learner initiates dialogue with an
environment that supports and engages the learner." (ibid:3)
 | Problem-solving tasks will be incorporated throughout the
unit, and will occupy approximately 5 minutes at the beginning of most lessons |
 | Intranet links would have already been organised before
this term commenced. |
 | Students would be given access to the Internet for the
term |
 | Students will revise theory using an interactive Internet
site |
 | Students will develop their own web page |
 | Students will be required to reflect upon their own web
page design and suggest improvements for the future. |

LESSON INDEX
Top
LESSON 1:
Objectives:
 | Students prepare title page using publishing guidelines
already learnt in semester 1 |
 | Students will use the digital camera to photograph each
other |
 | Students will download photographs |
 | Students will crop photographs |
Format: Students take photographs in pairs and download
separately. Students create their own title page using guidelines. Teacher stays at the
computer at which students are downloading their photographs.
 | Problem-solving task 1 |
 | This lesson is devoted to enabling the students to
organise their digital photographs and title pages for their folio of work. Students
generally like to choose their own backdrops for their photos and tend to take their photo
session seriously. Practice in cropping their photographs is incorporated here and these
photographs may be used in their web pages later. Also, if students individually connect
the camera to the computer and download their photographs for saving in their own user
space, then they have experience in connecting a peripheral. The teacher would be at the
one machine at which the photos are to be downloaded, to assist if necessary. |
Their title page should include their:
 | Photo |
 | Name |
 | Home group |
 | Subject |
 | Teachers name |
 | Term and year |
 | Clip art |
 | Page border |
 | Word art |
Students will create the framework for a file of their
favourite hyperlinks using FrontPage. (Students will add to this throughout the term).
Suggested headings are:
 | Tutorials |
 | Search engines |
 | Personal favourites |
 | Animation and clip art |

LESSON 2
Objectives:
 | Revision of MS Publisher |
 | The creation of a calendar for the term (10 weeks), using
Publisher |
 | The calendar will be used to record dates and diary
entries for their assignment |
 | Assessment dates are to be keyed in |
 | Dates for the NetMeeting and the local community speaker
are to be keyed in |
Format: whole class while teacher uses datashow.
 | Problem-solving task 2
|
 | The teacher would use the datashow to talk the students
through Publisher as a revision. The calendar that the students design in Publisher
becomes part of their assignment because they will use it to keep a brief log of their
activities like diary entries eg what they have achieved towards their project, useful
URLs etc.
|
 | In this lesson, the teacher would direct the class to the
details for the term on the Internet/Intranet,
assignment information, dates for exam, systems administrator talk, and the NetMeeting.
Students would note these on their own Publisher calendars. |
