Task You are to prepare a Web site. When completed this site will be copied onto the Intranet, and if suitable may be posted onto the World Wide Web. Your site must be multi-page and have links to other sites eg a friends site on the Intranet or favourite sites on the WWW. Your site may be personal (about yourself), something you are very interested in (eg a pop group), community ( a club or sports team), or may be a fictitious business site. This task will be completed individually and will follow the DDE (Design Develop Evaluate) cycle.
Design Choose the topic for your web site and then decide what will be your purpose in developing this site. Will it be to inform people, to sell products or to entertain? Look on the web for sites similar to the one you hope to develop and identify ideas, styles or concepts you can use. Collect information that can be used. This will include such things as text, images, banners, and links to other sites. You may wish to look for special features such as visitor counters, navigation buttons, backgrounds, animated gifs, music, or Java script. Once you have an idea of what you can use in your web page prepare a plan of what you think it might contain. The site must have a home page. This will have links to sub-pages which in turn may link to other pages. Prepare a diagram of how these pages will be linked together. From each page there must be a way of returning either to the home page of back up one level. Decide on a general layout of the pages. (Refer to the design principles in Unit 3) Prepare a sketch of this layout. This must be submitted as part of the assignment.
Develop Create a folder to hold your web page. This is very important. Unlike a word processed document the images and text you place on a web page are not part of the HTML file. While the text is stored with the HTML all other elements (images, sounds, videos, Java script, etc) are saved separately. The HTML merely points to them. All of the elements that are to be on the web page should be saved into the one folder. This will ensure parts are not lost, are easily referenced, and can be moved as a group when it comes time to publish the web site. Following your design and using the page layout guide prepare each page in turn. Establish the links between the pages. Include links to outside sites. As you go test your web site to see how it appears and behaves. When finished get someone else to view and comment on your site. When completed your site must be published in a folder of your surname and student number. A link will then be established from the computer studies home page to your site.
Evaluate Complete the evaluation form and prepare a one paragraph evaluation of how well you have performed on this task and what you would do differently if you were to redo the task. Add evidence of the sites you visited in research and detail any of the special features you have added to your pages.
