Operate computing packages - Spreadsheets and Databases
Using computers for data management

Work in this unit will refer to Chapter 2 of the IT Text book: The Computer as a Data Management Tool

Spreadsheet Activities:

Spreadsheet terms you need to know are:- cells, rows, columns, range, formulae, functions (sum, average, maximum, minimum, count, if ), templates, cut/copy/paste, fill, pie/column/bar/line chart

Database Activities:

Database terms you need to know are:- field, record, table, sort, query, Structured Query Language (SQL), Relational Database Management System, form, report, security, record locking

As you learn about databases you will be required to create a database about your friends, step by step. Make sure you fully understand how to do the following:- (this is good for revision!)

  • create a table with correct fields and data types
  • design a form to enter data
  • print, sort and query the data using SQL
  • mail merge with a word processor document and print our invitations to a party!
Database Assessment Task:

Complete the Database Assessment Task over the holidays.

This task requires a database program such as Microsoft Access. If you do not have this MS Office, you will need to download a database program (such as StarOffice) or complete the task in your own time at school.
