Activity
1 – Hard Disk Maintenance (Homework)
This activity
needs to be completed at home as you do not have access to the necessary
windows features on the school’s network.
- Find
and run the ScanDisk utility program (or equivalent) and analyse your
hard disk for errors.
- Type
out the instructions for how you did this
- Get a
screen print of the results screen (press screen print button) and paste
this in the document beneath the instructions you have typed
- Find
and run the hard disk Defragmentation program (or equivalent) to optimise
your hard drive
- Type out
the instructions for how you did this
- Get a
screen print of the results screen (press screen print button) and paste
this in the document beneath the instructions you have typed
- Print
and hand this document in to your teacher
Activity
2 – Referring to a User Manual
- A user manual for a printer has been placed on the ‘O’
drive at school. (file is called "MANUAL_3.pdf")
- Find the section of this manual on cleaning the printer.
- Copy, paste and save this information into a word document called
[Printer Model] Cleaning Instructions

3– Troubleshooting Faults
List the possible minor faults and some things you could do to troubleshoot
and fix them.
- The printer stops printing in the middle of a print
- The printer sends a message to your computer screen saying that it
is not receiving any signals from the terminal and therefore cannot
begin to print
- The mouse is slow and jerky
- The keyboard is not responding
- A handheld PDA electronic device keeps switching off

4 – Replace and Maintain Consumables
Find a supplier that has in stock at least 10 of the
13 items listed below. Provide:-
- the name of the supplier
- the item code and full name
- price
- amount currently in stock
Items include:-
- Inkjet cartridges
- Laser printer toner cartridges
- Ribbon cartridges
- Tape cartridges
- Floppy disks
- ZIP disks
- CD ROMs blanks
- Tape, CD, floppy labels
- Cables, connectors, plugs
- Cleaning tools and materials
- Batteries
- Power boards, extension leads, spike protectors
- Fuses
Activity 5: Hardware Maintenance
- Read through Unit 12: System Maintenance from Fundamentals of System Administration (handout), and answer the Self-Check Questions on p172.
- Type the questions in a word document called Hardware Maintenance
- Type your answers
- Get your work marked off as complete before you continue with activities 6 & 7.
Activity 6: Maintenance Scheduling and Maintenance Logs
- Use Microsoft Word to create the table that appears on p171
- Save the document as Maintenance Schedule Template
- Print the document (a blank table)
- This document will be used to keep a record of each task you complete in activity 7. Complete the table by hand as you complete each task.
- Once the table is full, type your hand written information into the document
- Print the completed document and save as Maintenance Schedule for Your Name
Activity 7: Clean your Computer
- Complete Activity 12.1 (p165) step by step to clean your computer, monitor, mouse and keyboard
- Update your personal Maintenance Schedule as you go (see Activity 2 above)
- Get your work marked (ask for the teacher) immediately after you have finished to demonstrate your competence in this task
Activity 8: Backup and Restore
In this activity you will create some notes about Backup and Restore in a new document of the same name.
- Read through p11-13 of the Heinemann IT Text Book and use this information to create notes that explain the following:-
- What is a backup and how can they be performed?
- The difference between full and incremental backups?
- What is medium / media, and list the common media used to store backup data.
- List 5 ways (from the most simplest to the hardest) you can do a backup.
- The “life story” of a backup tape to show your understanding of the “grandfather – father – son” backup scheme.
- Complete a Backup Gapfill Exercise.
When complete, copy and paste your final and correct answers under the heading A typical backup scheme in your Backup and Restore document.
