Activity 0 - IT Definition

Activity 1 - Background information

  1. Create a new word document called Working Effectively in an IT Environment using the IT Class Template. At all times use the pre-fromatted heading styles contained in this template.
  2. Read through the text Communicating in an IT Environment (p2-3, p9-21)
  3. Type the subheading Definitions and define the terms:- information, technology, information technology, system, information system.

Activity 2- Business Systems

  1. Copy the Business Systems table from Activity 1.5 and add two extra rows.
  2. Complete these two rows yourself based on two different information systems that you know of.

Activity 3 - Who uses IT?

  1. In pairs, summarise one of the 7 areas described on pages 12-16 of the Communicating in an IT environment text.
  2. Save your summary on a shared network drive.
  3. Open, copy and paste sections summarised by all students so that you have complete notes within your Working Effectively in an IT Environment document.

Activity 4 - Homework - IT around us

  1. Copy the table from Activity 1.6 and fill it in over the course of a week

Activity 5 - Mission and Vision Statements

  1. Create a new document called Mission and Vision Statements (using the IT Document Template.
  2. Type the heading Mission and Vision Statements and a definition for both a Mission Statement and a Vision Statement.
  3. Under the Mission statement definition, put the heading Examples.
  4. Use the Internet to find THREE different mission statements from companies that you know of.
  5. For each, list
    1. the company name
    2. a summary of the main points of their each Mission Statement;
    3. the URL for later reference.
  6. Type the heading Common Goals and Aspirations and briefly write about any common goals these three companies might have.
  7. Repeat steps 3-6 for Vision Statements

Activity 6 - Organisational Chart

  1. What does an organisational chart look like and what does it represent?

    To answer this question, read through the information here and copy it into your Working Effectively in an IT Environment document. (remember to use the IT Document Template).
  2. Using this information, create an Organisational Chart for your school.

    You will need to insert an Organisational Chart Object into the word document, and work out the structure of command in the school. (Use the help features in Word if you need to.

Activity 7 - IT Careers

  1. Visit the IT Careers Portal at the Australian Computer Society Website
  2. Look up TWO different IT careers that interest you and write a report explaining:-
    1. the duties (a duty statement)
    2. career path to chosen career
    3. qualifications required
    4. experience required
    5. personal qualities you need to be successful in this chosen area
  3. Go to MyCareer and find an example ad for each of your chosen IT careers above. Include a copy of this ad in your report

Activity 8 - Design a form

  1. Produce a word processed form that can be used for reporting a fault on a particular computer. Start by listing all the things that you think should
    be recorded on the form and develop the document according to your list. These faults should include both hardware and software. Remember that not all details of the fault need to be recorded as it is merely a document for informing the IT department of a problem, which they will need to follow up.

  1. What skills should a Systems Analysist have and what challenges might they face?
  2. What are the roles and reponsibilities of a Database Administrator?
  3. Describe some of the critical roles a Telecommunications Manager has in the IT industry.
  4. What roles must a Webmaster be proficient at?
  5. What requirements is a Chief Information Officer expected to fill?
  6. What is the job description of a Chief Knowledge Officer?
  7. Why do companies require the skills of an Independent Consultant?
  8. Name some different types of Programmers and the general functions they perform.
  9. Describe the complex areas a Computer Scientist would work in.
  10. What are the reponsibilities of a Software Engineer?
  11. How do Computer Hardware Engineers aid the advancement in Computer Technology?
  12. What requirements would a Web Developer need to have?
  13. What skills are required by aperson in Sales and Marketing in the IT Industry?
