What is a REMIX?

A remix is an alternative or extended version of a song.

Usually, when a song is released as a single, there are usually a number of remixes of that song on the one CD. DJs and producers create remixes and often the artist who performed the song has nothing to do with the remix.

Dance remixes were originally created for pop songs so that they would be played more often in nightclubs and discos — for a captive audience to dance to and grow to love the song, and ultimately run out and buy it.

Remixes and the Concepts of Music

Many musical concepts or ideas can be manipulated in a remix. These include:-

STYLE
hip hop, rap, ballad, soul, pop, rock, house, techno, r&b, etc
PITCH
chord patterns, high & low sounds, melody, major or minor key, melodic riffs
DURATION
tempo, repeated patterns (ostinatos), time signature, rhythm patterns
STRUCTURE
number and order of sections (verse, chorus, intro, instrumental), patterns, how are melodic ideas arranged?
TONE COLOUR
instruments used, type of instruments, quality of the sounds (harsh, dull, etc)
DYNAMICS & EXPRESSIVE TECHNIQUES
emotions, changes in the piece, louds and softs, slows down, instruments stopping and starting, contrast and unity

Activity 1: The Beautiful Experience

  • Download the worksheet (Word doc) The Beautiful Experience
  • Listen to 4 different versions of the song The Most Beautiful Girl In The World by The Artist Formerly Known As Prince (TAFKAP) and complete the sheet by comparing how each of the concepts of music are used.
  • Make sure you state what is the SAME and what is DIFFERENT in each version of the song.
  • Feel free to make further comments and observations on the back of the sheet.
