What is a Remix? (Part 2)

Activity 3: Remix Research

Use the Internet or magazines to find out about a DJ who makes remixes for musical artists. Choose any DJ you like, or whoever you can find suitable information about.

You could check the Online Magazines section of this website, Intermusic.com or back issues of Computer Music Magazine to look for articles and interviews with DJs.

WHAT TO DO:-

Write a ONE PAGE REPORT including information about:-

  1. The DJ (nationality, age, influences, record label, discography, etc)
  2. The steps followed in the creation of a typical remix
  3. Equipment used
  4. Tricks and techniques used in the remix
  5. List of work history - who has the DJ created remixes for before?

Activity 4: Remix Comparison

Go through your CD collection and find a song that you have two versions of (an original and a remix). Listen to each version and compare them by completing the tasks below. (If you don't have 2 versions of a song, you will need to download 2 MP3's of the same song or buy a CD single containing remixes. Check out the Downloading MP3s page of this site.)

WHAT TO DO:-

Write a ONE PAGE REPORT including:-

  1. A list of features that are the SAME in both versions of the song
  2. A list of features that are DIFFERENT in both versions of the song
  3. An explanation of how each of the concepts of music are manipulated in the remix of the song when compared to the original version. (Revise What is a remix and Remixes and the Concepts of Music from Outcome 1 of this module.)
