MT Workshop - for Teachers

Workshop Aim

The aim of this workshop is to demonstrate how music technology can be incorporated into music lessons in a typical school computer lab, without the need for expensive software, specialist hardware products, MIDI keyboards and fancy soundcards. There is more to Music Technology than just sequencing.

In this workshop you will:-

Download and print Sheet Music

TASK: Visit www.musicnotes.com, search for a song of your choice and print it.

NOTES:

  • You can print the first page only for FREE
  • This is often enough to get you started arranging or performing - you can work out the rest
  • You can purchase the complete sheet music online immediately.

Transcribe music using notation software

TASK: Transcribe (copy) this notation into Finale Notepad to experience this simple and FREE notation software package.

NOTES:

  • This program can be downloaded for FREE from Finale Music. (Mac and Windows versions)
  • You could install Finale Notepad across the network for all to use and have one full version of Finale on one computer for final scores - files are fully transferable
  • Get kids to download it at home - get them hooked and musically literate

Create a full stereo, CD-quality hip-hop track to impress your students with your natural coolness!

TASK: Read through the Acid Startup Instruction page and create your own remix of Madonna's Music. Save it to disk as a Windows Media File (.wma)

NOTES:

  • Acid Express is available for FREE from Sonic Foundry.
  • With Acid, you no longer need instrumental skills to create impressive music. As they create their tracks, students will quickly develop a real understanding of the concepts of music. A good acid track requires much thought in terms of dynamics, structure, balance, harmony, texture, timbre, performing media, etc.
