Hurry Up, Alice!
Christobel Mattingley

Puffin Books, 1998

Alice is a sleepy head. Every day she is last to wake up, last to get dressed and last to get in the car.
Until one day her family went whale watching, she was the first to wake up, the first to get dressed and the first one to get in the car.
Then she realised that it wasn't so good being first

"Why do I always have to hurry?" Alice asked herself.
Why does she?

We think Alice has to hurry because she is slow and dawdles and daydreams  and that she is annoying to her family and friends.
St Hildas, WA
People are always telling Alice to hurry up because she is a dawdler and she sometimes deliberately disobeyed.
Mrs Wright did not have to tell us to hurry up.

M6HU, WA
Alice always has to hurry up because she is a daydreamer, and she dawdles all the time. Sometimes Alice stops to look at amazing things but then her family says, 'Hurry up Alice.' She should hurry and be quicker so she didn't have to hear 'Hurry up Alice!'
The Chisholm Cheetahs, ACT
Alice has to hurry because she's always late. She always takes her time, she's slow, she dawdles, daydreams and is a slow-coach. She's not so interesting in the things others are interested in. Everyone is waiting all the time and they get bored, impatient, and angry at Alice.
Speedy Rappers, NSW
Everyone is telling Alice to hurry up because she is always daydreaming.
Area 11 Rostrata
Alice was a day dreamer and a dawdler. We think she needs to hurry up because
she would always be last. She was always interested in all the things she saw
and she was distracted by them

What did Alice do when she got out of the car? Why?

Alice got out of the car .She waited for someone to say "Hurry up  Alice". No one did. Everyone had raced off.
St Hildas, WA
When her family got out of the car, Alice was still in the car. Her family wanted to lock the door.
St. Schol's Gold Rappers
We think that Alice felt sad because no-one said 'Hurry up Alice'. That was the way that she knew they had seen what she was doing. Alice had to call the others to wait for her. We think the others were in a hurry to see the whales.

When Alice got out of the car she waited for someone to say "Hurry up Alice!" but no one did. Then she got angry because no one took any notice of her. Alice did this because she wanted attention.

Why was Alice more excited about  finding the message in the bottle than seeing the whales?
Alice was more excited about finding the bottle because since she dawdled she found it. It took time to get to her and she took time to go to it. She would have had to rush to see the whales and she didn't so that's why she was more excited.
Chisholm Cheetahs
We think that Alice was very excited because of two reasons. The first reason was because she did not see any whales but she found the bottle. The second reason was because the letter was from some one called Alice, and we think that Alice might be 8 like the other Alice.

Alice liked it because it was from South Africa. She didn't know that language
and she wanted to learn that language. She had not seen a message in a bottle
before.
St. Schol's Gold Rappers
Alice was excited because she has never opened a message in a bottle before. It might have come from a different country. Alice thought it was especially for her.

What do you think was in the letter that Alice in Australia wrote to Alice in South Africa?
Hello Alice I found your letter at the beach while we were whale watching. = Are there any whales in South Africa? I live in Australia and I am 8 years = old. Please write back love Australian Alice
St Hildas, WA
We think that Alice in Australia wrote that she was very excited to to find the bottle more than to find the whales and that she wished her a happy birthday or she might have asked what it is like in South Africa or about the weather down there.
Chisholm Cheetahs
Alice in Australia wrote to the person who found the bottle and asked them to write back. She gave her name and address. She must have told Alice in South Africa in the note that it was her birthday.
