Tashi and the Baba Yaga

Thank you for choosing Baba Yaga! This book is about an evil old lady who likes to eat children and has skeletons around a house. How creepy! Tashi almost gets eaten by Baba Yaga. Read the book to find out the rest.

1. What did Tashi forget to put on the goose?

  1. shoes
  2. hair
  3. hat
Tashi forgot to put hair on the goose.
Stephanie, Katie, Felicia, Laura, St Lukes Rappers
Our class disagreed about the answer to this question. Some felt that if you followed the text it had to be the hat, however, if you looked at the illustrations the hat was on the goose but the hair was missing. Students felt that the author's intention was that the 'hair' was missing.

I think that Tashi forgets to put a hat on the goose. What does everyone else think?

2. Look at the picture of the Baba Yaga's house on pages 12 and 13. Why are there skeletons all around it?

I think Baba Yaga ate the children and used their bones for decorations in her garden.
Bridie, Gib Gate Rappers
Baba Yaga ate small children and kept their heads - skulls and displayed them because she was so pleased with the number of children she had eaten...They make an excellent attraction!!! Tashi became very curious when he saw the house and the skulls and wanted to investigate further.

3. Look at the pictures of Baba Yaga's house on pages 33 and 34. How is it different from your house?  Why does it have wings and legs?

They have wings so they can travel from village to village. They have legs  so it can stand up. It also has wings so it can fly.
Daisy, Susannah, Amy, Shannon and Tatiana, St Hilda's Rappers
The house is different because our houses don't have crooked chimneys. We don't have skeletons outside. We have gates at the back of our houses. Alyssa doesn't have a handle on the door.
It has wings and legs so that it can fly and land.
From Alyssa and Aldiana, Stradbroke Rappers
This question is very interesting because it is true that houses are built according to customs and culture. Baba Yaga's house is fictitious as it would need to be to suit her lifestyle. Her house needs to have wings and feet so that she can escape at any time from mobs of angry villagers. Her house enables her to travel the world in search of different 'flavoured' children, she's not too fussy.

4. Baba Yaga is a traditional tale from Russia. Click here to read it online.  How has Anna Fienberg woven the elements of the traditional story into her tale about Tashi?

Gone!
Tashi's village has no hens. There are no eggs.  Can Tashi save them?

1.The villagers were  upset because there were no eggs for their breakfast omelettes. What other things could they have had for breakfast instead?

Tea, bacon, wheat-bix, toast
Stephanie, Katie, Felicia, Laura, St Lukes Rappers
This question about what to have for breakfast is an interesting one. The class felt that you could have anything else for breakfast and that maybe they would have to be more creative with cooking. The children believed that the villagers ate omellettes every day and that could only become boring. So, the villagers had a wide selection of foods to choose from assuming they had all the right ingredients. Amidst all argument came the following suggestions: cereals, bacon, rice, porridge, fruit, milk and so on. On the other hand, some felt that the villagers would only eat eggs for breakfast and therefore ate nothing when their eggs disappeared.

When there were no eggs for breakfast they could have had toast and cereal.

2. Why did the Wicked Baron steal all the hens?

Because he is going to give them to the pirates.
Alyssa and Aldiana, Stradbroke Rappers
1. The Baron was going to sell half the hens to the River Pirate 2. He kept half the hens so that he could control the price of eggs and make them really, really expensive to make himself rich. A nasty case of supply and demand!

3. Why did Tashi tell the River Pirate that the Wicked Baron was not going to sell him the eggs?
Tashi was trying to make the river pirate leave and then the wicked Baron could not sell the eggs.
Shannon, Amy, Tatiana, Daisy and Sussananh, St Hildas Rappers
Tashi gave the River Pirate a small purse of gold so that he would go away and not come back. It also saved himself from a life with the Pirate. It also meant that the Baron was forced to give back the hens, and from his own pocket pay for the circus to come to town. Everyone's a winner except the Baron.
Til next time Merriwa 1 Rappers

4. You are the River Pirate and you have just discovered that Tashi has tricked you by giving you a bag of copper, not gold.  How do you feel?  What will you do to get revenge?
Now we know that Tashi has tricked us by giving us a bag of copper, we would feel very cross. We would go back and say that this is copper and not gold. Give us the gold now!
Alyssa and Aldiana, Stradbroke Rappers
