Tashi and the Big Stinker
Tashi's village is visited by Only Brother, the giant. Can Tashi get rid of him?

1. What made Only Brother so fat?

Only Brother was so fat because he ate too much food. He ate from morning till night. Only Brother ate all the fruit [pomegranates]. He also ate all the fish and Chintu's birthday cake. He drank too much alcohol. Only Brother ate the peppery stew and the beans and look out everyone!!!!!! Using our imagination we think he also ate chocolate, a whole elephant, a whole cow, a giant spider, a whole school of children, snakes, snails and a real lot of baked beans.

We only started reading this Tashi book today and thought that parts of it were very funny. We felt sorry for Mrs Chintu having to cook so often for such a fussy eater. The answer to the first question is that Only Brother eats all day and also drinks too much. He does not seem to have any self control and is very greedy.
St Margaret Mary's Rappers
We think Only Brother was so fat because he was a giant and giants eat heaps. Only Brother loves his food and he must have his food just right. He eats all the time.

We think the Big Stinker was so fat because he ate too much, because he ate all the food that he saw.

2. What made the Big Stinker leave Chintu's house?

The big stinker left the house because he did a big explosion from his bottom that smelt revolting. His brother Chintu told him to leave.
Daniel & Nicholas
Chintu cooked up a special meal for the BIG STINKER and he  made such terrible smells, that even the canary dropped of its  perch and everyone ran outside and then Chintu threw the BIG STINKER'S clothes out of the window.
Indiah and Alice, St Hilda's Rappers
Only Brother left Chintu's castle because he thought Mrs. Chintu put too much pepper, special berries and spice in the the stew. He also thought that their was a horrible, disgusting, atrocious smell in the castle. Only Brother didn't know that the smell came from him. Only Brother wanted to leave and Chintu wanted him to leave as well.
Campbell Numbats
Tashi and Mrs Chintu tried to get Only Brother kicked out of the castle by making him a stew that had heaps of beans in it, which made him do big explosions that were really smelly. Then Chintu kicked Only Brother out but he said that the castle was too smelly anyway and he left.

He didn't have enough food.

3. Mrs Chintu is going to make a special dinner for Chintu to celebrate Only Brother's leaving.  What would be on the menu?

It would be nice if Mrs Chintu made the things that Chintu missed out on while Only Brother stayed over so we thought he could have special presents. We think he should have his Birthday cake and fish stew, shark fin soup and pomegranates.
Hayden, Reece, Laura and Stewart - Merriwa 13
This week's answer is his cake and pomegranates.
Tess and Hannah, Stradbroke Rappers
Chintu' special dinner was chocolate cake, fish cakes, lemon tarts, meat pies and pizza.
Hannah, Kingston Rappers

4. Mrs Chintu decided to make another cake for Chintu to replace the one that Only Brother ate.  What would be the recipe for a cake for a giant?

This week's answer is cream, strawberries and pepper.
Tess and Hannah. Stradbroke Rappers
The recipe for a giant's cake would have 2 dragon eggs, 5 people, some berries, chocolate, 500 kg of pudding and a pinch of salt.  Stewart, Reece and Shaun - Merriwa 13

The Magic Flute
When the piper plays his flute, all the creatures and the people follow the music.

1. Jack asks his dad, "Say your friend is in trouble, but when you go to save him, you hurt the person who got him into trouble.  Does that mean you did the wrong thing?"

If you were Jack's dad, what would your answer be?

No because your friend was in trouble because of that person and you should also ask him not to do that to your friend.
Daniel, Matthew, Lochlainn, St Lukes Rappers
No

Tess and Hannah, Stradbroke Rappers

Yes
Aldian and Alyssa, Stradbroke Rappers
Yes, because you're sticking up for your friend.
Daniel & Nicholas

2. Why were the villagers so scared of the locusts?

The villagers were scared of the locusts because locusts eat the crops. We have been looking at insects this term and we would be a bit worried too.
Audrey and Eva Merriwa 13
They were scared of the locusts because they were waiting to harvest the rice and the locusts would eat all the grass if they came.
Daniel & Nicholas
The locusts would eat the harvests and crops
Matt, Dan, Loch, Tom, St Lukes Rappers

3. Why was Tashi suspicious of the piper, even before he took the children?

His eyes were pale and hooded.
Tess and Hannah, Stradbroke Rappers
Tashi was suspicious of the piper because there was a story his grandmother once told him about a piper and a plague of rats.
Hannah, Kingston Rappers

4. Have you read The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning? What parts of it has Anna Fienberg woven into the story of The Magic Flute?

In both stories the characters got revenge on the towns people for not paying for their services by trying to steal the children.
