Search Skills
Searching requires the user to insert key words or phrases into a search engine or database to find sites or articles that match the search criteria. In the current information deluge we are likely to get 'too many' results rather than 'too few' or perhaps just irrelevant results.
There are numerous techniques available to help produce effective search results but the searcher must be prepared to adapt the search and conduct multiple searches, depending on the results achieved at each stage. Some of the techniques for effective searching are inherent in many search engines and online databases. These include the use of Boolean operators, phrase searching, the use of the concept of a wildcard and proximity searching.
