Understanding URLs

The URL or Uniform Resource Locator often contains the name of the person or group that the site was created for. It also contains information about what sort of site it is, such as:

.com commercial organizations  - purpose to make money http://www.coca-cola.com
.net networking services http://freshmeat.net/
.org non-profit organizations  - usually with a  common interest or cause http://www.wwf.org/
 
.gov government http://education.qld.gov.au

 

.edu or .ac educational or academic institutions
.au Australia - differs for each country except United States which has no country identification
