With the 2002 Winter Olympics being held in Salt Lake City, Utah, projects involving this city and state will become increasingly popular with teachers.

Requires students to use different search tools, evaluate results, and follow links (may substitute any person, place or time).

1. Use different search tools from the WOW Search Techniques page - www.uswestwow.org/nwow/neducation/nsearch/ to search for Salt Lake City AND Utah AND history. With each search, look at the first 10 or 20 hits. Some search tools offer percentages to guide you concerning a site's relevance. Look for hits with .edu, .gov, and .us as their main address ending.
2. This is a good time to use metasearch tools such as: Dogpile - www.dogpile.com, MetaFind - www.metafind.com, Savvy Search - savvysearch.com, or Wisdom Dog - www.wisdomdog.com. Some tools highlight the words for which you are searching when they occur in the brief page summary. No project on Salt Lake City would be complete without a picture and discussion of Brigham Young's influence.
3. As you move around links, don't forget to open Notepad so you can store pieces of information you find. It is a great time-saver. Use Notepad initially to collect information as it will not slow down your computer as much your favorite word processor will. Later you can copy and paste into your word processor.
4.

Don't forget to search for "Salt Lake City", "Salt Lake City" AND Olympics, "Salt Lake City" AND Olympics AND Games.

5. Don't waste time. You don't need to follow every interesting link. Look for ones that appear to pertain to your topic.
6. Once you have collected all of the information you can copy and paste into your favourite word processor, organize your thoughts, and cite your resources.
7. Be sure to properly cite your resources, refer to Section 5: Evaluating Web Resources that focuses on copyright.
