Being able to access resources in your community is an important life skill because that knowledge provides independence and competence to live and function on your own. Students may be shown The U S WEST Dex Internet Yellow Pages - www.uswestdex.com as an excellent site to research services or products in their community.

For fun show your students how to look up their favorite ice cream shop or shopping mall. It is particularly exciting to find their parent's place of business online. Anything that is really familiar will be fun and exciting. Seeing someone they know, or someplace they go, on the computer makes it all feel more real.

Requires students to access information about local products, services, people, maps and community links through the U S WEST Dex Internet Yellow Pages (may substitute any product or service).

1. Use The U S WEST Dex Internet Yellow Pages - www.uswestdex.com to research "auto stereos" in your home town.
2. Use appropriate categories to explore various possible sources.
3. View Web pages of any online sources selling this product and research offerings and prices.
4.

As you move around the links, don't forget to open Notepad so you can store pieces of information you find. It is a great time-saver.

5. Evaluate the stereos by listing the options and the cost. What is the best deal?
6. Click on the map link to obtain a map of where the business offering you the best value is located.
7. Click on the link to "Driving directions" and enter your home address to receive door to door directions to the store. Are the directions correct?
8. In your favorite word processor, write an analysis of your findings and give a map and driving directions to get to the place of business you have chosen as the best value. It would be interesting to find out if others in your class made the same decision.
