According to the E-mail Discussion Lists and Electronic Journals (Carvin, 1998) the Internet contains thousands of special interest discussion groups, known as lists. These lists are controlled by a program known as Listserv, and they are usually moderated by a list owner. Information may be provided to you either in digest form or on a post-by-post basis. Any member of a list may take part in an existing conversation or begin a new one.

     Lists may also distribute electronic journals (known as e-journals or e-texts). These moderated on-line magazines are usually dedicated to a specific area of research. You may join a List or e-journal by sending e-mail to the list address and typing the following in the body of the message:

subscribe [name of list here] [your first and last name here]

     A great E-mail Discussion List for K-12 teachers is KIDSPHERE (list name), a discussion group focusing on classroom activities and experiences.

  • To subscribe, send a message to: listserv@vms.cis.pitt.edu

  • In the body of the message, write: subscribe Kidsphere (your firstname and last name)
     For example, to subscribe to KIDSPHERE,

  • Send e-mail to: listserv@vms.cis.pitt.edu

  • In the body of the message, write: subscribe Kidsphere Jane Brown

     When wanting to write to Kidsphere, write to -      kidsphere@vms.cis.pitt.edu

     To unsubscribe Kidsphere,

  • send e-mail to listserv@vms.cis.pitt.edu

  • In the body of the message, type unsubscribe Kidsphere (your first and last name)
