USING THE WEB IN EDUCATION

Webquests the Aussie Way

by Dr Sue Trinidad

Information is not the same as useful knowledge and the time spent accumulating huge amounts of factual knowledge might be better spent working with information to generate knowledge of personal significance therefore our students need to develop new skills.

The six interrelated information-processing skills include

TASK DEFINITION : define the problem and identify information resources needed to solve the problem.

INFORMATION-SEEKING STRATEGIES : identify the range of possible information resources and prioritize resources for investigation.

LOCATION AND ACCESS : find the information sources and the relevant information within sources.

USE THE INFORMATION : process (read, view) the information and extract relevant ideas.

SYNTHESIS : organise and create a product (eg:decision, paper) from ideas.

EVALUATION : consider the product and the effectiveness of the problem-solving process.

(Grabe & Grabe, 1998, p17)

These six skills can be expressed as a series of questions:-

What needs to be done? What can I use to find what I need?Where can I find what I needWhat information can I use?How can I put my information together? How will I know if I did my job well? (Jansen & Culpepper, 1996)

QUESTION: How do we stop students from simply copying information from the Internet, pasting it into a word processing document and turining it in as their own work?
ANSWER: Quit assigning the types of assignments that allow students to do that!Assign students the types of assignments where they must collect building blocks (gather information), organise the blocks (critical thinking) and then build new structures (communicate).

Web Quests, Scavenger Hunts and Collaborative Projects

How do you get the most out of the web?

Webquests http://edweb.sdsu.edu/webquests/webquest.html

This site is designed to serve as a resource to those who are using the WebQuest model to teach with the web. By pointing to excellent examples and collecting materials developed to communicate the idea, all of us experimenting with WebQuests will be able to learn from each other.

Scavenger Hunts

Are a great way for children to explore the resources of the web while using their higher order thinking skills at the same time. See chapter 7.26 of Shelley Cashman Series "Teachers Discovering Computers" http://www.scsite.com/tdc/ch7/webinfo.htm and click on TREASURE HUNT

and go to http://www.learner.org/exhibits/parkphysics to see experience this below

There are many collaborative projects teachers can be involved in once there is an Internet connection in your classroom. Why are collaborative projects good for your students see
