Writing a Speech

Home | Up

Teacher's Notes: The Persuasion Map, from ReadWriteThink is interactive. it follows the 3x3 rule for argument essays and speeches. That is: three main points and three supporting details for each point. I show students this tool using an interactive whiteboard and we do one together (a joint construction) before students do one on their own or with a partner. It is also useful to give students a printed copy of the blank map before they do their own online. This gives them some think time to jot down and research points and details.

First, pick a topic.

For example:

Solar power is the way of the future!

Then

Make a list of 3-5 'points' or reasons why you think solar power is the best way to deal with issues of the environment and global warming.

Look up information on each of your reasons. (statistics, expert opinions, facts etc). Choose the best three reasons to use in your map.

Use the Persuasion Map to organise your ideas for a speech. Fill in the boxes in the Persuasion Map  following the instructions and then print out your map.

This is a plan for a speech.

Write your draft. Don't forget the 'Persuader's Toolkit'!
