Storyboard lesson

Teacher's Notes: Students are often asked to construct a storyboard as a task and the reasons for the task can vary widely. Both software referred to here are free and similar in their function. Students will need a bit of time to 'play 'with them before they can tackle a significant task. If you have access to an Interactive Whiteboard you can construct a storyboard in class which will get them engaged in using the software. You could also ask them to use both and evaluate the two. The Director's Notebook has many applications and works well with poem interpretations. See Online lesson In Flanders Field

Storyboards are important in understanding the ways any kind of film task is composed. It is the essential 'planning' stage of the visual part of the film. experiment with the following software until you feel comfortable with how it works. Begin by matching text and images.

Suggestions:

1. Choose a short poem you like and think about 3-5 images you would put with he poem. Find the images and save them to a folder. Open the software and follow the directions to create a storyboard using lines from the poem and the images you have selected.

2. Pick a proverb or cliché ('it's raining cats and dogs'). Save some images to suit the proverb or cliché in a folder. Create a storyboard to express the ideas of the proverb or cliché using the images you have collected.

3. Select a short speech or part of a speech from a play (about 5-10 lines only). Think about the ideas and meanings of the lines. Find and save some images to suit the meanings. create a storyboard for the meaning of the speech.

4. Pick a word that has many connotations or multiple meanings: jealousy, greed hate, revenge, racism, nice, cool, radical etc. Find images that illustrate these meaning and ideas. Create a storyboard on this word.

Software 1

Download the Celtx software and create your own script and storyboard easily and professionally.

Note: check to see if it is already downloaded to the computer you are using and/or check the "Lesson' drive on the schools system. Look for a Celtx folder.

Software 2

Download Director's Notebook and manual and construct a film script or just use the storyboard functions.
