Six Steps

Up | Six Steps

This is a summary of the steps suggested by Kate Grenville in her book Writing From Start to Finish.

More information about Kate and her work can be found by clicking on the title.

1. Examining the question or ‘brief’.

2. Identify the ‘Task’ words.

Remember these are usually verbs.

3. Identify the limiting words.

These are the words that restrict the task to a particular area or focus. They stop the topic from being too broad or general.

4. Identify the type of writing. Sometimes this is implied by the context, or it may be ‘in disguise’. Such as when a question appears to be asking you to write an imaginative composition but you are actually required to use what you know about a topic
